About the book
Gregor Samsa cannot get out of bed. Yet his thoughts reach the missed train before they reach his altered body: work is waiting, debts remain, and the household depends on his wages. If he could explain himself through the door, perhaps the morning could be put right. His family no longer understands his voice.
Grete initially brings food. His mother hopes to reach her son. Gradually, furniture leaves his room and doors close. Gregor still remembers the years of work and his plan to send Grete to the conservatoire. One evening, her violin draws him towards the life beyond the room.
This full-colour manga adaptation of Kafka follows a second, less extraordinary transformation: a household reassessing someone who can no longer provide for it. Gregor’s inner life continues while the space others allow him grows smaller.
