The Architecture of Joy

Spinoza’s Philosophy of Happiness and Freedom

A successful result does not account for the whole day.

Written and prepared for publication by Mehmet Gökhan İnce

About the book

The work is finished and the promises kept. By evening, little attention remains for someone we love. Before recording such a day as a success, The Architecture of Joy examines how it was built. Mehmet Gökhan İnce reads Spinoza alongside questions about the human cost of work, family responsibilities, friendship and shared life.

Joy concerns an increase in the power to exist and act, rather than an obligation to feel good. Across twenty-five chapters, the essays consider fear and approval within desire, the unity of mind and body, meaningful work and relationships that make room for others. Freedom involves understanding the conditions that shape us.

Grief is not presented as faulty thinking, nor understanding injustice as a duty to endure it. Responsibility is distinguished from carrying every burden alone. A bibliography and concise Spinoza glossary support further reading.
